Joe Biden to sign executive order that half of new vehicles sold in the US will be electric by 2030

White House to announce measures to ensure that by 2030, half of all new vehicles sold in the United States will be electric, or zero-emissions, while reinstated strict fuel consumption and emissions standards that were abolished under President Donald Trump (2017-2021).

In a joint statement, Ford, GM and Stellantis pledged to “Achieve annual sales of 40 to 50%” of electric vehicles for “Bringing the nation closer to a zero-emission future in line with the objectives” of the Paris climate agreement.

Senior officials in the Biden administration admitted during a media conference call to outline the measures that one of the motivations of the US government is not to let China dominate the electric vehicle market, which is the future of the sector.

US authorities have pointed out that while others, such as the European Union (EU), are accelerating their plans to electrify the sector to take the lead, China tries to gain control of the global electric vehicle and battery supply chain.

In this regard, the President of the UAW, Ray curry, noted that the sector is “at a critical time when countries are competing to produce the vehicles of the future” and the United States “is lagging behind China and Europe” while manufacturers spend billions of dollars in expanding markets and production capacity.

The White House has indicated that the executive order Biden will sign this Thursday will change this situation and that the target of 50% of sales by 2030 “is calibrated” so that existing production plants can safely adapt.

In addition, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Transportation will also announce the impose strict fuel and emissions standards on new vehicles which had been eliminated by the previous Trump administration.

The White House has indicated that the new standards will provide net profits of approximately $ 140,000 million with savings of 757,000 million liters of gasoline over the next five years, as well as the reduction of 2 billion tonnes of carbon pollution and improving the health of the population.

The United States government has estimated that each driver will save an average of $ 900 over the period due to the drop in consumption of their vehicles.

The Biden administration noted that all of these measures will allow rreduce greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles sold in 2030 by more than 60% compared to vehicles sold in 2020.

This, in turn, will enable us to achieve the biden target enough to, By 2030, the global emissions of the US economy will be 50 to 52% lower than in 2005.
