Meanwhile, it's an incredibly risky move for the Raptors, who would abandon a local star under contract until 2021 in exchange for Leonard, who would have to give up his contract and become a free agent in the summer of 2019. Maybe Toronto can convince Leonard to sign back with them during the season , much like the Thunder did with Paul George, but if Leonard leaves next summer, the team would get rid of DeRozan for nothing at all.
Despite the continued success of the regular season, something had to be changed in Toronto after being eliminated by LeBron James and the Cavaliers in three consecutive seasons. The team returned the 2017-18 NBA coach Dwane Casey and their arch-nemesis left their conference, but apparently that was not enough.
