The eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Canary Island of La Palma continues with more explosive phases and has already razed some 240 hectares of land within a perimeter of nearly 16 kilometers, according to data provided by the Department of Homeland Security (DSN).

In its latest situation report published at 8 a.m. this Friday (local time), the DSN also indicates that the column of gas or plume that comes out of the volcano of La Palma, an island in the Atlantic archipelago of the Canaries, reaches a height of up to 4,500 meters.

Two active lava flows are maintained. The northernmost is almost stopped and has a maximum height of 12 meters while the southern front continues to advance at 4 or 5 kilometers per hour with a height of 10 meters.

The washhouse has a length of 3,800 meters and is 2,100 meters from the coast.

Also the European satellite system Copernicus, which follows the evolution of the eruption since its creation, has updated its data and emphasizes that At 6:14 p.m. yesterday, the lava had already covered 180 hectares (14 new in the previous eleven hours).

Regarding air quality, the Department of Homeland Security indicates that, according to meteorological data, Acid rain is ruled out for the next 24 hours and adds that “if this happens, it would not cause significant illness as it is a one-time, non-persistent event.”

Along the same lines, Emergencias 112 Canarias insists that “The sulfur dioxide values ​​reflect that the air quality is good and that acid rain is excluded.”

The DSN report adds that yesterday the action of the wind on the surface caused movements which caused a certain delay in the departures or arrivals of any flight between Tenerife and La Palma.

In addition, he adds, “Enaire has temporarily established until the end of the current situation two restricted airspace zones in the municipalities of El Paso and Los Llanos de Aridane, in the land and sea zone below 3000 feet, which does not affect commercial aviation ”.
