Lawfare: Lula wins court victory, Lava Jato is compared to “Stasi” – Telam

Former President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva obtained an important victory on Tuesday before the Federal Supreme Court, the highest court in Brazil, which granted him for the most part the right to access the leaked messages of former judge Srgio Moro and Operation Lava prosecutors. Mendes said that Moro and Lava Jato used the judiciary in the city of Curitiba as “the Stasi” to investigate judges from even higher tax courts, the Brazilian Afip, to divulge this information to friendly journalists and thus put pressure on them to ratify the decisions of the first instance.

This vote is seen as the prelude to the session on overturning the two convictions handed down by Lava Jato against Lula, who spent 510 days in prison and was disqualified from participating in the 2018 election won by Jair Bolsonaro.

In November 2018, Moro officially joined the Bolsonarismo and assumed the post of Minister of Justice on January 1, 2019, seeking a future place on the Supreme Court, but resigned in May 2020 due to disputes with Bolsonaro.

Judges Gilmar Mendes, Ricardo Lewandowski, Carmen Lucia and Kassio Nunes Marques voted in favor of Lula, the latter being the court judge appointed by President Bolsonaro, while Edson Fachin, who appears in the leaks, has been called against .as an ally of the prosecutor Dallagnol and judge Moro.

After the vote, former President Lula (2003-2010) revealed via social networks that he was released on Tuesday after being hospitalized on Saturday for bacteremia at Sirio Libans hospital in San Pablo, where he had been treated in 2012 for throat cancer.

The former president, 75, fell victim to COVID-19 at the end of the year after arriving in Havana, Cuba, where he was recovering before returning to Brazil in mid-January.
