LEGO presents its biggest building kit in history: the Roman Colosseum with 9,036 pieces

The mythical Roman Colosseum now holds an unthinkable record, set by 9,036 pieces of brick Lego, who created a replica of the iconic symbol of Rome for children to put together with patience and determination.

This is the largest reproduction ever made by the Danish company and surpasses that of the plateau Star Wars Millennium Falcon, which has 7,541 pieces.

The new construction perfectly reproduces the architecture of the original amphitheater. Built under the Roman Empire, this ancient amphitheater was the largest of its time: it had the capacity to 80,000 viewers.

An epic model characterized by three architectural orders: Doric, Ionic and Corinthian columns, all faithfully recreated with bricks, using innovative construction techniques, including decorative patterns on the rollers reproduced with skates for LEGO minifigures.

This impressive 3-story arena measures 27cm high, 52cm wide and 59cm deep. Every detail can be admired from all angles thanks to the freestanding oval display included in this model. The set also contains an elegant coffee table book with building instructions and historical facts about the Colosseum.

Senior Set Designer Rok Zgalin Kobe said that “one of the biggest and most important challenges was convey the monumentality of the Colosseum with bricks. “

“The LEGO model was meant to highlight the architectural peculiarity of the original: the rows of columns flanking the arches of different styles. To do this, the whole is achieved using an effect of vertical exaggeration. Therefore, the cross section is much steeper than the original structure. ”detailed.

“With the experience of making the LEGO model, we hope to encourage everyone to learn more about the original,” Kobe said.

The firm has notably produced a moving video, for the launch on November 27, Black Friday day, with spectacular images, which were shot in Cinecittà, traditional Roman film studios.

At its peak, the Colosseum in Rome was the largest amphitheater in the world, with a capacity of over 80,000 people.

The recreation is extremely faithful, because it is also necessary to build the hypogeum, the structure under the sand where the gladiators and the beasts came out, as well as the olive trees and the vegetation outside.

During its construction is divided into three large blocks, which are then gathered at the base. These three blocks can be removed to show what the interior of the Colosseum looked like, since it is intended to be used as an exhibit, once assembled.
