Leopoldo López met with the mayor of Guayaquil ahead of Lasso’s inauguration as President of Ecuador

The adversary Leopoldo López and the mayor of the Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil, Cynthia Viteri, met this Saturday before the inauguration of the new president of the Latin American country, Guillermo Lasso, which will take place next Monday and they discussed the situation in Venezuela and that of Venezuelans who have emigrated to the neighboring country.

“We are in Guayaquil to meet dozens of Venezuelans who continue their fight for freedom and democracy in Venezuela”, Leopoldo López shared through his Twitter account. “There are already more than 7 million Venezuelans who had to leave our land, not because we wanted to but because we had done so” added.

Along with this post, the opponent shared that during his meeting with Viteri, he addressed issues such as “The humanitarian and social crisis that Venezuela is going through, the political prisoners and the constant violation of the human rights of all Venezuelans”. For his part, Viteri also shared a message about the meeting on his Twitter account and confirmed that Venezuela “will always have our support for whatever it needs”.

“More than seven million Venezuelans are out of their country thanks to the government of Nicolás Maduro and Guayaquil we support them with shelters and municipal programs”, said the mayor of the Ecuadorian city.

Specific, López underlined “the importance of regularizing the nearly 500,000 compatriots who are in Ecuador and of recognizing the passports and expired documents of our diaspora”.

In this sense, Viteri mentioned that during this meeting “He has learned of the actions they will take before the International Criminal Court (ICC) where he will prosecute crimes against humanity.”

On the other hand, López thanked this support and recalled when four years ago Viteri tried to visit the opponent in Ramo Verde. “They did not allow him to enter, besides attacking and expelling him,” he added.

Finally, López took the opportunity to seek “international support from democratic governments for the National Salvation Agreement”.

Before this meeting, Leopoldo López arrived in Quito where he declared “for us the most important thing of this visit is to be able to speak on behalf of these 500,000 Venezuelans who are here, to ask for the support of President Guillermo Lasso, of his government” , according to the newspaper “El Universo”.

A few weeks ago, opposition leader Juan Guaidó proposed the National Salvation Accord as a “ road map ” that would end with the holding of “ free ” presidential and parliamentary elections and which would have as main catalyst a process of dialogue with international supervision. .

For his part, the President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, although he first assured that Guaidó seeks dialogue because he is “isolated and defeated”, initially ruling out a possible negotiation, he then declared that he was “ready” to meet the opposition and do so with the support of the EU, Norway and the Contact Group.
