Leopoldo López urged Spain “not to tire out” of support for Venezuela

The Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo López asked this Good Friday, as part of his tour of Galicia (north-west), Spain’s firm support for your country for the achievement of “fair, free and verifiable” elections.

“Do not turn your back in search of a people for their freedom”, He shouted in Celanova, a municipality of Ourense which has a large Venezuelan community in which he met other exiles.

In a well-known café in the area, he organized an hour-long event in the presence of the mayor, Antonio Puga, from Celanova Decide.

Leopoldo López said he was unfamiliar with Galicia and shared that he was impressed by the “activity and proactivity” of his compatriots who reside in this country.

He told those present that 90% of Venezuelans are in poverty and 60% in critical situation. Also that there are seven million outside the national territory.

Leopoldo López urged to maintain a common voice for Venezuela of opportunities and recalled that “We need Spain and we need Europe” to then point out that Nicolás Maduro and his dictatorship have countries that support “very strongly”, among which he listed China, Russia, Turkey, Iran and Cuba.

Leopoldo López’s passage through Galicia was accidental, as on March 30 it was proposed a sanction by the local police of Cambados (Pontevedra) for allegedly bypassing the perimeter closure in force in the Galician community due to the covid -19.

It was in a routine check in the operation to comply with the restrictions imposed by the pandemic and the agents, when they approached his table when they realized that it was occupied by people who did not were not from the commune.

They had arrived from Madrid, where the politician has fixed his residence since leaving the Spanish Embassy in Caracas in October, from where he kept the regime of Nicolás Maduro and abandoned his position as house arrest.

Although Leopoldo López presented a series of documents that would justify his presence in Galicia, the local police also ordered the proposed sanction against him and his companions, as is the case for all foreigners detected.

However, on his official Twitter account, Leopoldo López indicated that his trip to Galicia consisted of meeting other exiles and “victims of the Maduro dictatorship”.

“I am not aware that he was fined or broken a rule,” he concludes.
