The Sovereign Pontiff joked that Brazilians “have no salvation” because they prefer to trust in the national drink rather than in prayer.

Pope Francis joked on Wednesday after a general audience at the Vatican and said Brazilians “have no salvation” because of their few prayers and their fondness for cachaça, a typical Brazilian alcoholic drink.

Father João Paulo Souto Víctor, from Campina Grande (Paraiba), asked the Sovereign Pontiff to pray for the Brazilian people and received an unexpected response.

You have no salvation. Lots of cachaça and little prayer, ”says Francisco, laughing.

Brazil became the first country visited by the Pope in 2013, during World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro.
