Canadian prime minister Justin trudeau regretted the discovery and noted that it was a “painful reminder” of a “shameful chapter of history of our country “.

The cause and exact date of the deaths of the minors are still unknown. Leaders of the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc community are working with specialists from the museum and the forensic office to get more information about the event.

Rosanne Casimir, community leader for the city of Kamloops in British Columbia, said the preliminary discovery highlighted an unthinkable loss that was never documented by school administrators.

The remains of the 215 children were found during an inspection of the closed school in 1978. “As far as we know, the deaths of these children have never been documented,” Casimir said. “Some of them were only 3 years old.”

“We are looking for a way to confirm the facts with the utmost respect and love for these lost children and their families, knowing that Tk’emlups te Secwepemc is the final resting place for these minors.”
