Macri subscribes in Chile for the creation of ProSur, the new regional bloc without Venezuela

It should be remembered that a few days ago Ecuador definitively abandoned Unasur. The body created in 2008 has been integrated by Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Paraguay having suspended their activities in 2018.

In his speech to members of the brand new ProSur, Macri defended the new bloc and said that "keeping MPs from Unasur is a useless expense." Among the conditions imposed on Chile to belong to this new space are "the full validity of the democracy, the respective constitutional orders, as well as the promotion, the protection, the respect and the guarantee of the rights of the man".

In addition to Venezuela, Bolivia did not participate in the agreement (Vice-Chancellor Carmen Almendras went to Chile but did not sign the declaration) and Suriname, while that Uruguay will do so as the observer.

The conclave of the first leaders took place not without without protest against them. Chilean social organizations organized a demonstration a few meters from La Moneda to reject the arrival of heads of state.

The debate around the conflict in Venezuela and the regional reconfiguration was not avoided in Buenos Aires. During the three days of the Second United Nations High-Level Conference on South-South Cooperation, Chancellor Jorge Faurie himself admitted that the issue had been dealt with in more than one bilateral meeting.

"Venezuela is important to us, we have mentioned in the dialogue between President (Mauricio) Macri and the Secretary of the United Nations," he said.

At the end of the last day of the Conference, the Ambbadador of Peru, Peter Camino Cannock, took the floor to read a final declaration on behalf of the delegations of Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia , Costa Rica, Guatemala and Honduras. Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Australia, Georgia, Israel, the United States, the United Kingdom, the Republic of Korea, the Dominican Republic, the Czech Republic, Japan and the Union in which they refused to attend the meeting of representatives.
