Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro announced, for the second time in three months, that his country has found an antiviral that “100% neutralizes” the coronavirus, international press reported.

“I can present the drug that 100% neutralizes the coronavirus: Carvativir,” Maduro said in a message broadcast by state television VTV.

He explained that he was announcing “to have established the national and international patent, to have received the official sanitary permit of the country”, according to the press agency Europa Press.

The president called the drug a “miraculous gothic” with which “massive experiments” with coronavirus patients have been carried out over the past nine months, with “good results”.

“This antiviral has been used as part of the treatments applied in Venezuela to patients with Covid-19, giving good results; Carvativir is a powerful antiviral from Venezuela, here we are thinking of humanity”, he said .

Maduro assured that this week he will have “a meeting with the country’s health officials to establish the system of direct distribution by the thousands to health centers in the country.”

He stressed that Carvativir “will be incorporated into the kit of coronavirus drugs” which are used in Venezuela.

On October 25, Maduro reported that a scientific research organization in his government had found a molecule that completely eliminates the coronavirus.

“Venezuela has developed a drug that completely cancels the coronavirus, once the six-month studies of our Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (ICIV) have been demonstrated,” the president said then, also via VTV.

That day, the Minister of Science and Technology, Gabriela Jiménez, explained that the ICIV had started six months ago the study of the biological activity of cells affected by Covid-19 and subjected to different concentrations of the active ingredient identified.

“It is a derivative of ursolic acid and this molecule shows 100% inhibition of virus replication in vitro,” said the official.

Jiménez added that “it was subsequently evaluated in healthy people without showing toxicity at the doses he was confronted with in the presence of the virus”.

Maduro and Jiménez then underlined that they hoped that the World Health Organization (WHO) would ratify the results obtained by the IVIC, in order to be able to face, through international alliances, the massive production of this molecule.

Venezuela had accumulated 123,709 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and 1,148 deaths from the disease since the start of the pandemic, Vice President Delcy Rodríguez reported today.
