An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.7 was recorded this Sunday off Corral in southern Chile, the United States Geological Survey reported. No damage was reported.
“The characteristics of the earthquake do not meet the conditions necessary to generate a tsunami off the coast of Chile,” the navy said.
Ground movement was recorded at 6:39 p.m. at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), 140 kilometers (86 miles) west of Corral, 860 kilometers (534 miles) south of Santiago. It was felt with different intensities in front of the regions of La Araucanía, Los Ríos, Los Lagos and Biobío.
The national emergency office of the Interior Ministry called the movement “medium intensity”. So far, no damage has been reported to people or property, they added, and basic services are functioning normally.
Commander Rodrigo Holzapel of the Toltén Fire Department in the La Araucanía region said that after the earthquake they had not received emergency calls.
