Massacre in Algeciras, Huila: nine people were killed on a farm

This Monday, May 31 Department of Defense confirmed through their social networks that a new massacre took place in Colombia, this time in the Vereda Quebradón Sur, in the municipality of Algeciras, Huila. To the place where they were murdered nine people with guns, say the authorities, in the morning.

Apparently, the news was published by residents of this area, so intelligence reports indicate that the event took place on a farm owned by Alvaro Barrera, the father of a returnee from FARC-EP and who now works as an escort in the UNP Special Unit.

The NGO Indepaz gave more details about the incident and assured that it would have been presented in the Palmira farm, Quebradón Sur village, of the aforementioned commune of the department of Huila. In addition, according to this register, the non-governmental organization indicated that among the murdered persons were the operations manager and 8 other workers: “The facts about 7:30 a.m. when heavily armed men entered the area and shot at these people ”.

Figures of massacres in Colombia:

According to Indepaz, this would be the third massacre at the same place. The first one happened on July 16, 2020 with the murder of four people (including a 15-year-old boy) and two injured; and the second on September 22, also last year, where seven other people lost their lives, including two minors.

The most recent case occurred in the rural area of Suarez, north-west of the department of Cauca, the past May 25. Here the murder of three people between 18 and 30 years old who, according to witnesses, were taken from their homes by heavily armed men around noon to be murdered later.

“Another massacre in Cauca, village of Tamboral, Suarez. Deaths and massacres everywhere, for years. No one for that! Everything has been done, everything has been said. And they ask why are people on the streets? And they think it’s just tax reform, ”Senator Temistocles Ortega argued at the time via his Twitter account.

The aforementioned NGO also clarified that with this they are already 41 the massacres which have been featured in the country so far this year. The departments where these mass killings took place the most Antioquia, Cauca Yes Cauca Valley, all with 7; at Narino there were six and in Caquetá three more. The overall balance gives a total of 158 victims.

These figures contrast with 76 massacres which happened in 2020, as revealed by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). The previous year was the one with the highest number of such acts since 2014, as they were 292 the dead.
