Strong winds and intense rains were recorded today in Key West, Florida Keys, United States, due to the passage of Hurricane Elsa, which strengthens as it approaches Tampa Bay, on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.

Elsa is expected to pass through the Tampa Bay area tonight or early Wednesday morning and may make landfall tomorrow afternoon.
Tampa International Airport has announced that it will suspend flight operations this afternoon, with plans to resume operations tomorrow, depending on how the storm develops.

The storm surge could reach more than five feet around Tampa Bay, an area very sensitive to flooding due to the low coastal topography, with the heaviest rains north of Tampa.
Experts believe flooding is possible across most of Florida, from Naples to Jacksonville, and could spread to the northern state of Georgia.
The hurricane will likely pass east of New York City and Long Island on Friday morning, then accelerate around Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard, where winds and heavy rain are possible.
According to the U.S. National Hurricane Monitoring Center (NHC), Elsa on Wednesday recorded winds reaching a maximum speed of 120 kilometers per hour, while moving north at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour.
