Nail US research finds no “potentially serious health effects” with messenger RNA vaccines against covid-19, for which they analyzed data from 6.2 million vaccinated over two years.
Study released by Jama today is the first comprehensive results from the U.S. vaccine safety program Vaccine Safety Data Link (VSD) on preparations for Pfizer and Moderna.
“These results of our security monitoring are reassuring,” said the lead author, Nicolas klein, Director of Kaiser Permanente Center for Vaccine Studies.
The study reports the results from mid-December 2020 to June 26, 2021 and assessed the health history of 6.2 million people for the first dose and 5.7 million for the second of either of these two vaccines based on messenger RNA (mRNA).
Analyses compared specific health incidents during the first three weeks after inoculation with similar ones between 3 to 6 weeks after the puncture.
The design wanted to compare patients as similar as possible to each other to reduce the number of factors that could complicate the results and an unvaccinated comparison group was added in a further analysis, the mutual said in a statement. Kaiser Permanente.
The researchers examined 23 possible effects which included neurological disorders such as encephalitis, myelitis and Guillain-Barré syndrome; cardiovascular problems such as acute heart attack, stroke, and pulmonary embolism; and others like Bell’s palsy or multisystem inflammatory syndrome.
After analyzing patients’ medical records and assessing whether the problem started before or after vaccination, statistical analysis was applied to determine if the number of incidents exceeded a certain threshold or “signal”.
The conclusion was that “none of the targeted health outcomes achieved the score”, although in some cases they were less precise due to the small number of cases.
The authors highlighted their findings on cases of myocarditis and pericarditis confirmed in young people. The study identified 34 cases in patients aged 12 to 39 years.
The authors calculated that among patients in this age group there is a risk of 6.3 more cases of myocarditis per million doses in the first week after vaccination.
Other research has calculated a “significantly higher” risk of myocarditis from COVID-19 than from the vaccine, the note adds.
