A Mexican immigrant has died trying to climb the fence at the border between Mexico and the Texas town of Brownsville, the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported on Saturday evening.

The event that occurred last Friday when officers of the The border patrol assigned to Brownsville station received a notice that a person fell while trying to overcome the separation barrier close to the international Gateway entry point.

Upon arriving at the scene, uniformed officers found a Mexican citizen on the ground with a major injury to his leg, iCBP said in a statement.

The immigrant was transferred to a nearby medical center by the emergency medical services, where he underwent two different surgeries to treat injuries from the fall.

However, the man did not regain consciousness after the administration of the anesthesia and remained hospitalized in critical condition.

On the same day, the Mexican’s life support was withdrawn, who has not been identified by U.S. immigration officials, and was pronounced dead by medical staff.

CBP does not specify what the possible causes of death were and, as he was in its custody at the time of death, The Professional Accountability Office of that federal agency is investigating the incident and the Office of the Inspector General of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has also been notified.
