Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, 67, reported on Sunday that he was infected with coronavirus.

“I regret to inform you that I am infected with covid-19. The symptoms are mild but I am already on medical treatment. As always, I am optimistic. We are all going to move forward, ”he said in a message on his Twitter account.

López Obrador explained that over the next few days the Home Secretary, Olga Sanchez Cordero, will “represent” you at the morning press conferences that the President hosts each day.

Although he tested positive, the president assured that he would continue “Public affairs awaiting the National Palace”, where his residence is, and that on Monday he will respond to the planned call with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the supply of the Russian vaccine.

“Tomorrow (for Monday) I will take a call with President Vladimir Putin because, regardless of the friendly relations, it is possible that they send us the Sputnik V vaccine,” he said on social networks.

López Obrador joins the list of world leaders infected with covid, including former United States President Donald Trump and United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Mexico has accumulated 1.7 million covid patients and nearly 150,000 deaths after a week in which three records of daily infections and deaths were linked.

With these data, it is the fourth country in the world in number of deaths, behind United States, Brazil and India, according to John Hopkins University.
