At least 18 bodies have been discovered in half a dozen clandestine tombs in Ahome and Mazatlan, localities of the state of Sinaloa in Mexico, authorities said.

The number of cadavers "should be ratified once the corresponding forensic genetic tests have been completed by specialists," said the Sinaloa prosecutor's office in a statement.

The prosecutor's office has confirmed the opening of found body search kits, representing the largest number of at least 13 bodies in four pits in Mazatlan, the main resort town in the northwest of the country.

In Ahome, the prosecutor's office of Sinaloa said that during the excavations, remains of at least five bodies were found, which will also be the subject of medical genetic studies. for their subsequent identification.

The Mexican government declared that the country "has become a huge underground grave" by presenting on February 4 a plan for the search for the missing, integrating the participation of the relatives of the victims and answering the requests of the international organizations.

According to government records, there are 40,000 missing persons in the country, more than 1,100 clandestine graves and around 26,000 unidentified bodies in the police forensics.
