Miami collapse: 10 dead confirmed after finding another body in the rubble of the building

Five days after building collapse in South Florida, death toll rose to 10Miami-Dade County Mayor announced Monday, Daniella Levine Cava, who clarified that 151 people are still missing.

“This morning we recovered another body. This brings the count to 10. The total number of people found is now 135. And the number of missing, 151 “Levine Cava said.

Besides the bodies, Rescuers have found incomplete human remains that coroners are trying to identify.

For reasons not yet determined, the northeast wing of the building Champlain towers, inaugurated in 1981 and equipped with total of 136 apartments, collapsed in seconds at 1:30 a.m. (6:30 a.m. GMT) on Thursday, June 24, while its residents were sleeping.

The mayor said search and rescue operations were continuing and thanked the rescuers for their tireless work since the day of the collapse.

Levine Cava, Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, and MP Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who represents the District of Surfside, appeared before the press after communicating the news to the families of the victims.

Fifty-five apartments have been turned into a mountain of rubble where today Over 240 people worked against the clock in different tasks but with one priority: finding survivors.

So said the mayor of Surfside, Charles Burkett, shortly before the press conference of the mayor of Miami-Dade, the governor of Florida, the lieutenant governor Jeanette Nunez, the deputy Wasserman schultz and several rescuers.

Burkett said that although five days have passed since the collapse, it is still possible to find living people, as demonstrated in earthquakes and other similar disasters.

Wasserman Schultz pledged a “full investigation” into the causes of the collapse and Mayor Levine Cava assured that he will get “to the bottom” in these investigations.

On Monday, it was learned that a former Surfside official who reviewed the alarming report on structural damage in the building that collapsed around 2 a.m. local time last Thursday in 2018 He replied a month later that the condo was in “very good condition”.

In October of the same year, the design office of engineer Frank Morabito found abundant cracks and crumbling in the columns, beams and walls of the parking lot of the co-ownership.
