Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said Monday search teams had removed three more bodies from the rubble of the collapsed building in Surfside. (Florida, United States), bringing the death toll to 27.

After the bodies found today, the provisional number of people missing due to the partial collapse of the Champlain Towers South building was 118, while the number of people located is 191, according to recent official accounts.

Search and rescue teams returned shortly before midnight Sunday to the site of the damaged building, i.e. shortly after the part that remained standing was demolished for security reasons, and around 01:00 local time (05:00 GMT) on Monday they have already worked “100%”, Levine Cava reported.

The mayor stressed that the decision to demolish what was left of the residential building after the collapse that occurred at dawn on June 24 was not taken lightly. But this now allows rescuers to perform their work in an unstable area that was not accessible.

Sunday time (02.30 GMT on Monday).

On tropical storm Elsa, hitting Cuba on Monday, local authorities have indicated that although the latest trajectory models suggest it will reach between Tuesday and Wednesday Florida’s west coast doesn’t rule out heavy rains and high winds in Miami-Dade and other parts of the southeastern state, as well as flooding and even tornadoes.

The causes of the Champlain Towers collapse are under investigation and are already a legal battle has startedl seeking compensation for the damage suffered by certain residents of the apartment building, built in 1981.

As documents in the Surfside mayor’s files revealed, the building exhibited structural issues that were detected in 2018 by an engineering firm and whose recommended expensive repairs had not been fully addressed.
