Miami landslide: Six more bodies were rescued from the rubble | There are 60 deaths

Rescuers recovered six more bodies from the rubble of a building in Surfside, in Miami-Dade, adding the bill to 60 dead due to the partial collapse of the building on June 24.

During a press conference, the mayor of Miami-Dade, Daniella Levine Cava, indicated that until Thursday they are 80 missing persons due to the partial collapse of the Champlain Towers South building in the town of Surfside when there are 200 residents located.

Levine Cava pointed out that around 1:20 a.m. (5:20 a.m. GMT), members of the rescue team observed a minute of silence two weeks after the 12-story building constructed in 1981 collapsed.

The mayor recalled that the teams in place since Wednesday were facing a “painful” transition, from a “search and rescue” operation to a “search and recovery” operation, in which specialists they gave up trying to find living people.

They also collect and catalog personal items found among the rubble. Of the bodies found so far, 35 have been identified by authorities.

The last identified victims are Graciela Cattarossi, 86 years old; Gino Cattarossi, of 89; Simon Segal, 80, and Elaine Lia Sabino, 71, whose bodies were found Tuesday, Miami-Dade police said.

The demolition last weekend of what remained of the residential building, located by the sea, gave a new rhythm to the search operation, because now rescuers have access to the entire site where they are found the building with more than 130 units.

The partial collapse of the Champlain South Towers, which occurred in the wee hours of the morning on June 24, gave rise to several lawsuits against the syndicate of co-owners. State Attorney Katherine Fernández Rundle said Wednesday that a Miami-Dade grand jury had agreed to investigate building safety.

In addition, he indicated that the grand jury will issue “recommendations to prevent this disaster from happening again, not only in Surfside, and not just in condominiums, but in all buildings and structures in the coastal, inter-coastal and surrounding areas of our county, state. and nation ”.
