The two countries agreed to break the stalemate in the search for a political solution to the war in Syria, said Tuesday the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, at the end of the meeting. An interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"We had productive discussions on the way forward in Syria, things we can do together, in which we share a set of interests on how to move the political process forward", Pompeo told reporters at the airport before leaving Sochi, the Russian city of the Black Sea.
"There is a political process badociated with UN Security Council Resolution 2254 that has been paralyzed and I think we can now start working together to solve this problem," he added.
Resolution 2254, adopted unanimously in 2015, advocated a political process in Syria supported by the UN.
Pompeo explained that the two powers support the creation of a committee to draft a Syrian constitution, a key milestone that has been delayed by differences over its composition.
For its part, Pompeo said that Washington and Moscow had "the same goal" in the North Korean nuclear issue, and expressed the hope that the two countries could "work together" on this issue.
