Millions of Denmark’s “zombie minks” to be exhumed and cremated

The government of Denmark has decided to exhume, cremate, approximately four million of the 15-17 million mink that were euthanized because they were carriers of a new strain of coronavirus.

The procedure will take place at the earliest in May 2021, when there will be no further risk of contagion for workers, local media reported.

At the beginning of November, these animals were eliminated because they could be at the origin of a mutation of the new coronavirus, potentially problematic for humans. Most of them were then buried in mass graves on land belonging to the Danish military.

The minks were buried in a military zone in the west of the country and in Holstebro, in the west of the country, some of their corpses resurfaced due to nitrogen and phosphorus which produces its decomposition, which poses a risk of air and water pollution.

The government, led by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, justified its decision by arguing that the mutation could have a negative influence on the development of the vaccine against the disease.

Danish health authorities identified around 200 cases of Covid-19 linked to the mutation of mink, which forced the imposition of restrictions in the North Jutland region, where most of the farms dedicated to these animals are located.

Politicians fear that the decomposition of carcasses of dead animals could lead to contamination and demand that the carcasses be dug up and destroyed by other means, such as burning them.
