The Cubs take home
Entering the ninth in Thursday's game, the Cubs did not have much fun against the Diamondbacks this week. Chicago had lost two of the first three games in the series, and was two points behind Brad Boxberger on the lump. Another loss seemed imminent.
But that's not what happened. Instead, Ben Zobrist made a run and was at first with a withdrawal when David Bote went into the plate. Bote, who appeared in his 21st match Thursday, then made it unimaginable, slashed a 0-2 field to tie the game.
Anthony Rizzo was next, and he took the first pitch of his at-bat before ending the game with a home run walk-off. For Rizzo, it was his first homer since June 24 and his second since June 11:
The Cubs have a lot of problems, but they continued to find ways to win. This is not always pretty, but it has turned out to be an effective way to claim the advance of the National Central League.
A tries to extend his series
Is there a more fun baseball team? I am not sure. Oakland have won each of their last five games and are 26-7 in their last 33 games. It's the best baseball record since June 16th.
On Tuesday, the A erased a 10-2 deficit to beat the Rangers. On Wednesday, they wiped out a 5-1 deficit, and won 6-5 thanks to Khris Davis' two-run pbad in the ninth inning. It was his second home race of the match and his sixth home race in his last four games. The A became masters back.
The #Athletics overcame deficits of four or more rounds to win eight times this year (eight races once, six races once, five races twice and four races four times), which are the greatest victories in a season by a team of A since the Philadelphia A of 1949 also had 8.
During this 26-7 the A have gone from 11 1/2 games behind the second-place wildcard of the AL to just 1 1/2 games behind. The Mariners must now look over their shoulders. How could they not be?
On Thursday, the Athletics will send Trevor Cahill (1-2, 2.95 ERA) to the mound against Bartolo Colon (5-8, 4.85 ERA) in the final of their three-game series at Globe Life Park in Arlington. A win allows Oakland to win a streak of six straight wins, move them to an idle Mariners game and give them their first run of 27-7 since 2006.
