Yanks' Severino still struggles

Yankees as Luis Severino came to me Starting Saturday, the Royals had a tough time. After a strong outing against the Red Sox on July 1, Severino recorded a 1.98 ERA with 138 strikeouts and 29 walks. In his next three starts, however, Severino worked just five innings each while allowing 14 runs and six homers.

Yet, opposing an alignment of post-Moustakas Royals punches Saturday at Yankee Stadium, where Severino had launched a 1.64 ERA this season, would surely provide a reversal of the situation. Well, here's what happened …

So that comes down to 20 races allowed in his 19 1/3 innings pitched. Although his command seemed stained on Saturday, the problem was that he was recovering easily – Severino gave 33 hits over those 19 innings and one-third. It should be repeated that the last round of damage was done by a team consisting of Alcides Escobar, Adalberto Mondesi, Rosell Herrera and Jorge Bonifacio. He also included a No. 3 hitter – Salvador Perez – who came with a .263 OBP.

This remains a small sample of games in the larger scheme, but Severino has been scored since before the All-Star break. The extended rest did not help, nor did the Triple-A alignment he faced. Yes, the Yankees have fortified the rotation and the bullpen via trade in recent days, but Severino's last start before the deadline raises the question of whether GM Brian Cashman should do even more on the pitching front.

Nats abandons Heartbreaker to Marlins

With a potential sale of the trade deadline imminent the Nationals dropped Saturday's game against the Marlins in a heartbreaking way. J.T. Realmuto blocked a kick along the straight line of the 10th inning. Washington used a five-man field and the ball managed to land where the field players were not positioned.

After the match Bryce Harper, who was at the start of the five-man infield when the walk-off bloop fell, was asked about Realmuto's single. His answer: "If this guy were on our side, it would not have happened." Hmmm. The Nationals reportedly showed interest in Realmuto for weeks

. As for the Nationals, the defeat marks their series of three consecutive victories with a match to play before the deadline for trading on Tuesday. Ozuna slams the Cubs early

The Cubs and Cardinals play the second game of their weekend at St. Louis on Saturday and the first six -started on Chicago starter Jose Quintana. The big blow came courtesy of the card fielder Marcell Ozuna …

The Cardinals are at best wild card contenders this season, while the Cubs are big favorites to win NL Central for a third consecutive season. Even so, the Cardinals dominated Saturday, rising to 9-6 against their rivals this season. It's not a lot, but it's something.

Harvey takes the final start before the deadline

Chances are Matt Harvey made his final start with the Reds on Saturday night. Harvey, who started Saturday with a 4.50 ERA in 13 starts with the Reds, is a prime commercial candidate ahead of Tuesday's trading deadline. He had a 1.86 ERA in five starts before being beaten for eight points in three 2/3 innings.

Beyond the results, Harvey also showed a top speed Saturday night. His fastball averages 95.9 mph and capped at 98.6 mph. It was not just his best velocity of the season. It was his best velocity for almost three years.

The results can not be ignored, of course, but interested teams will be quite satisfied with this speed. Chances are that Harvey will never be the guy he was in 2013 and 2015, although any sign that he is close to being that guy is positive. Saturday's velocity was a good sign and came at the right time for the Reds, who hoped that Harvey would do everything he could to maximize his commercial value.

Believe it or not, Odor is not the first player with an interior-the-park and a house outside the park in the same game this season. Aaron Hicks of the Yankees did it in April. That's not that Odor has done less impressive, of course.

Rougned Odor finished 5-5 with 2 HR, with one of the circuits being a version inside the park.
