A guide specializing in adventure tourism confessed on social media that he was one of four men who dismantled the bizarre monolith in the Utah desert last Friday.
“Don’t leave your personal belongings on public land if you don’t want them taken from you,” Sylvan Christensen commented in a video, shared on his Instagram account.
In the pictures, you can see how a group puts the remains of the monument in a wheelbarrow and then removes them from the cannon.
The guide stressed that there is no tourist infrastructure on the premises and that “the ground was not physically prepared” for so many curious visitors who came to capture images of the monolith.
The metal “obelisk” was discovered on November 18 and “disappeared” only 10 days later.
“People have arrived by car, bus, van, helicopter, plane, train, motorbike and bicycle and there isn’t even a parking lot. […] There are no marked trails or garbage cans, ”he explained.
At the moment, it is not known who installed the monument. Some suggest it was a “marketing” strategy or an art installation honoring minimalist sculptor John McCracken. However, more creative ideas about its purpose pointed to an “alien super weapon”, a “next-gen old Xbox prototype” or a “NASA device.”
Also in Romania
Utah isn’t the only place a monolith has appeared. A similar metal structure was discovered on a hill in northern Romania, in the town of Piatra Neamt, which has now disappeared, according to Robert Iosub, a reporter for the local media ziarpiatraneamt.ro.
As with the Utah structure, whoever placed the object did not take the proper steps to obtain a building permit, Mayor Andrei Carabelea said in a Facebook post over the weekend. Still, he took it in stride and joked that some “ naughty and terrible ” alien teenagers were probably putting them all over the world. “I am honored that they chose our city,” he said.
