More than 140 people killed by adulterated alcohol use in India | Chronic

More than 140 people died after consuming adulterated alcohol during a celebration in a tea plantation in northeastern India.

Illegal alcohol consumption began Thursday night at a party in the Golaghat district, in the state of Assam, in northeastern India, and the dead quickly spread to the neighboring district of Jorhat.

"Up to now, the death toll reaches 143"he said at the agency EFE the deputy director of the law enforcement department of Assam police, Mukesh Agrawal.

The Deputy Commissioner of the Golaghat District Administration, Dhiren Hazarika, revealed that 85 deaths occurred in his district, where 160 people remain hospitalized for the time being.

At the moment, there are eight inmates linked to the production and sale of adulterated alcohol, explained Hazarika, while a man and his mother, both involved in the sale of alcohol in the tea plantation, have died.

"They brought (the liquor) into containers, but perhaps the containers had already been used to carry the insecticide from the tea plantation, which may have made it toxic. " The autopsy will tell us what happened.explained Hazarika.

This happened after last week confirmed the deaths of over a hundred people for adulterated alcohol consumption a few days ago in northern India, where the authorities have made about 300 arrests as part of a campaign against this problem that strikes the poorest population.

The tragedy in Assam already exceeds the greatest poisoning of recent years in this Asian country. In December 2011, more than 130 people lost their lives by ingesting an illegal alcohol acquired near a station in the state of Bengal, in the east of the country.
