An unusual event was experienced in the Tanzanian Congress, where a member of parliament was kicked out of the premises for his clothes and forced to change to return.

The incident happened last Tuesday during a session of a National Assembly in that country, after MP Hussein Amar claimed that the way some women dressed caused an outrage in the legislature and pointed directly to the MP Condest Michael Sichwale.

“Mr President, an example is my sister sitting to my right in a yellow shirt. Look at the pants she put on, Mr President.”Amar pointed out with reference to his fellow legislator.

Faced with the complaint, the President of Parliament, Job Nduga, ordered Sichwale to “Go get dressed and meet us later”.

In this sense, Nduga argued that this was not the first complaint he received regarding the way MPs dressed and added that “From now on, any MP who does not dress properly should not be allowed” to attend sessions and should be invited to “go away and change”.

“Let’s try to live up to our standards. Looking at our rules and traditions, women must conform to them.”, said the Speaker of the Tanzanian Parliament, according to local media SABC News.

Renunciation of the decision

On the other hand, a group of lawmakers led by MPs Jacqueline Ngonyani Yes Stella Manyanya rejected the action taken against Sichwale, arguing that it “unfair” since there was no “nothing inappropriate” in the clothes he was wearing, as they asked for an apology for what had happened.

In turn, MP Sichwale was defended by many users on social media, who criticized that “women’s bodies and decisions are controlled by men” and called the decision “misogine”.
