A mystery has all of Russia in suspense. In the city of Dzerzhinsk, did several stray dogs with bright blue fur appeared. The animals were seen cerca de la planta industrial Dzerzhínskoye Orgstekló, which was until 2015, the date of its bankruptcy, one of the largest chemical companies in the region, specializing in the production of acrylic glass and hydrocyanic acid.

The photos were taken by a neighbor from the Russian region of Nizhny Novgorod and they quickly went viral around the world. The first theories are based on the fact that the color of the fur of these dogs could be caused by chemical waste from the abandoned factory, such as copper sulfate, which can cause irritation and burning of the skin causing inflammation, in addition to other effects.

In the pictures animals can be seen walking on a snowy road in the city of Dzerzhinsk, 370 kilometers east of Moscow, the capital of Russia. Portraits captured and viralized provoked different reactions on social networks. On the one hand, there were people who showed their outrage at the situation that dogs go through while, in other cases, they compared them to characters from cartoons and movies.

After the distribution of the photographs, Russian authorities visited the site to try to find out the reasons for the strange hair coloring of these dogs, in addition to performing medical tests on each of them to rule out disease. This was also due to that one of the first hypotheses that circulated on social networks spoke of radioactivity.

However, this is not the first time this has happened in Russia. Less than a week ago, other photos of dogs went viral on social media, but this time green and in the city of Podolsk. This worried the residents of the neighborhood, who alerted the authorities. Although on this occasion the reason for their coloring was the paint, which someone would have thrown at them.

The mystery of the “blue dogs”: it could be a chemical reaction

According to Andrey Mislivets, bankruptcy agent for the region’s chemical company, “Surely his fur was dyed with a chemical from the plant”. “These are homeless dogs running around the area. Perhaps they have found traces of a chemical in some buildings, such as copper sulphate. Several years ago I noticed that some dogs already had dyes in unusual colors. But no one is in control. I cannot bear the costs of taking these homeless animals and their sterilization ”, declared Mislivets, in dialogue with the official press agency RIA Novosti.

On the other hand, he said that various animal rights organizations contacted him, who informed him that the health of dogs is not in danger “ and that “they are ready to find a home for each of them when the rigorous medical tests are completed.”
