Police are investigating the death of an American couple in a hotel in the eastern Dominican Republic, where they were on vacation.

Apparently, Edward Nathaniel Holmes, 63, and Cynthia Ann Day, 49, were suffering from respiratory failure and fluid in the lungs, said the Regional Institute of Forensic Sciences. But he said more tests would be needed to get more details on the cause of death.

The couple arrived at the Bahia Principe hotel in La Romana on May 25 and was planning to leave on the 30th of the same month, the day he was found in his room after being absent for not showing up at the administration to register their departure, announced the authorities. Several vials of drugs for hypertension have been found, police said.

On May 27, the couple shared photos and messages on their Facebook accounts in which they seemed to enjoy their holidays.

In another case, the Dominican police investigated an attack on an American tourist in Punta Cana that this woman recently published on social media, detailing an badault of several hours by a man wearing, according to him, the uniform of a resort complex.

More than 6 million tourists visit the Dominican Republic each year.
