The driest winter arrived in Antarctica this month and left the coldest temperature detected on Earth: -98.6 degrees Celsius.
The figure was confirmed by a team of researchers led by Ted Scambos of the University of Colorado at Boulder, according to the magazine "Geophysical Research Letters".
For a long time, the lowest known temperature was -89.2 degrees recorded on July 23, 1983 at the Russian base in Vostok. (DPA)
