New British variant of Covid-19 detected in Argentina

In Argentina, two new cases of the British variant and 14 of the Rio de Janeiro variant were detected, on a sample of 156 people from the city and province of Buenos Aires.

Salvarezza shared via his Twitter account: “A new report of active surveillance of variants of SARS-CoV-2 in the city and province of Buenos Aires, has confirmed two cases of variant 501Y.V1 (UK) and new case of variant P.2 (Rio de Janeiro) ”.

This is the last surveillance report of the Argentine Inter-Institutional Genomics Project of SARS CoV-2 (Country Project), which reported the detection of 16 cases of the two variants of the SARS-Cov-2 virus, responsible for Covid-19, but did not find the mutations 501Y.V2 (South Africa) and 501Y.V3 (Manaus). The variant mutations characteristic of the UK were reportedly detected in two cases of partial sequencing of a sample obtained between November 1, 2020 and February 7 of this year.

The UK, South Africa and Manaus, Brazil variants were associated with a higher transmission rate or drastic increase in its prevalence in a short period of time. In Argentina, this variant was reported on January 15 with the description of the case of an Argentinian resident in the United Kingdom with a history of travel to Austria and Germany and who arrived asymptomatic from Frankfurt in late December.

Compared toVariant of Manaus, it has already been found in 18 countries, including Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela and Argentina. Inside the country, it was reported to have been detected on February 8 in two samples of travelers from Brazil. The South African variant, on the other hand, has not been detected in America.
