The President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, declined to respond to complaints received by the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (ICC) regarding alleged irregularities in the negotiation of covid-19 vaccines by his government. The far-right president did not mince his words,
“Do you know what my answer is? I shit, I shit at the CCI. I won’t answer anythingBolsonaro said on his weekly social media show. The ICC has asked the president to respond to complaints about an attempted purchase of the Covaxin vaccine, of Indian origin, at high prices.
“I am not going to respond to this type of people on any assumption, they are not concerned with the truth and fear to wear down the government,” Bolsonaro added.
Covaxin has become the center of attention in the Brazilian political world, after the complaint that MP Luis Miranda and his brother, Luis Ricardo Miranda, filed with the Covid-19 ICC over negotiations for the purchase of the Indian vaccine. Added to this is the question of whether Bolsonaro has ignored alerts regarding alleged irregularities in the negotiation.
In addition, there is another complaint. At the end of June, businessman Luis Paulo Dominguetti, representative of Davati Medical Supply, said he had received an order in February of one dollar per dose to secure a contract for 400 million doses of AstraZeneca. “Anyone who wants to sell vaccines to the ministry, must do it this way,” would have been the words of his interlocutor, the director of logistics of the Ministry of Health, Roberto Ferreira Dias.
The official allegedly claimed that the corruption was aimed at paying a group “within the government”. Ferreira Dias has been dismissed from his post, but the scandal is only growing and calls are increasing for Bolsonaro to be removed from office.
