Nicaragua: Daniel Ortega’s regime ordered the arrest of opponent José Pallais

Daniel Ortega’s regime in Nicaragua ordered the arrest of another opposition leader, the fifth in a week. On this occasion, José Pallais, political analyst and member of the National Coalition, was arrested.

The leader was arrested by the Sandinista police accused of having “carried out acts undermining independence, sovereignty and self-determination, inciting foreign interference in internal affairs, requesting military intervention”.

In this sense, police reported in a statement, Pallais was arrested for “to have organized with the financing of foreign powers to commit acts of terrorism and destabilization, to propose and manage the blockages of economic, commercial and financial operations against the country and its institutions, to demand, to exalt and to applaud the imposition sanctions against the State of Nicaragua and its citizens, and injure the supreme interests of the nation ”.

“The national police carry out all the relevant investigative procedures and refer the indicted person to the competent authorities for prosecution and determination of criminal liability”the press release warned.

He is the fifth opposition leader that Nicaraguan police have arrested in a few days after the arrests of Cristiana Chamorro, Arturo Cruz, Félix Maradiaga and Juan Sebastián Chamorro García.

The UN and the IACHR have demanded the freedom of these political leaders who seek to confront the Sandinista regime in the legislative elections of November 7, during which dictator Daniel Ortega is seeking a new re-election.

The Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights (CENIDH) denounced that the authorities are using “a new repressive model: to summon, without saying why, those they consider to be political enemies, to question them., let them leave the prosecution and then detain them on the way home or inside ”.

In addition to the arrest of the candidates, who according to local laws would exclude them from the elections, the electoral tribunal eliminated the Democratic Restoration Party (PRD-Evangelico) and the Conservative Party (PC-right), the oldest in the country. .

Ortega, 75, returned to power in 2007 and has governed since 2017 with his wife, Rosario Murillo, aspiring to the presidency for the eighth time in the November elections. The Sandinista dictator is in his second stage as president of Nicaragua, having coordinated a government junta from 1979 to 1985 and first presided over the country from 1985 to 1990.
