Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro said on Friday that he would not allow the "show" of humanitarian aid, evoking the cargo that reached the Colombian border at the request of the opposition. Juan Guaidó, recognized interim president by forty countries.
"Venezuela will not allow the demonstration of fake humanitarian aid because we are not beggars of anyone," Maduro said. at a press conference.
According to Maduro, "the humanitarian emergency" is "made in Washington" to "intervene" in Venezuela. "It's the record that complements the intervention, it's the show of humanitarian aid," he added.
Maduro attributes the shortage of food and medicine suffered by Venezuelans to sanctions imposed by the United States. "Free the money that has blocked us and kidnapped us. It is a macabre game: they are tightened by the nape of the neck and they are asked for crumbs, "he said.
A dozen vehicles loaded with medicine and food arrived Thursday in the city of Cucuta, on the Colombian border, where a storage center was installed near the international bridge of Tienditas, blocked by the Venezuelan army with two trucks and a cistern.
"This is not a help, it is a message of humiliation to the people, because if she wanted to help, she should stop any economic punishment (…) The package is very kind of outside, humanitarian aid, but inside it has poison, "he said.
Guaidó announced that more shipments would arrive in the coming days and that other collection centers would be set up in neighboring Brazil and on a Caribbean island to be defined.
Guaidó insists on humanitarian aid and reiterated his calls to the army so that it does not block the entrance. "They are in a dilemma: either they are placed next to people in need or the dictatorship," he said.
