The Catholic leader avoided demonstrating in favor of Maduro or Guaidó, saying it would be an interference in Venezuelan affairs, but said he feared a "bloodbath".

During his recent trip to Panama, he was limited to saying on the last day of his visit that he wanted "a just and peaceful solution" to the crisis.
On the return flight to Rome, he added that "If they needed help" to improve the situation, "they agree and ask for it".
In any event, he considered that it would be "imprudent and harmful" to show a favorable position to one or the other of the parties.
