The Tourism Ministry of the trans-Andean country said the number of visitors to the region had decreased by almost 50% from one year to the next in January.

The sharp rise in the dollar had an impact on the number of Argentines who visited Chile: the phenomenon of visits to the trans-Andean country in search of electronics and cheap clothing was halved in 2018.

According to the Ministry of Tourism of Chile (SENATUR), 278,727 Argentines entered the country in January, against 532,043 Argentines who did it in January 2018. This represents a difference of -47.4%. Even in January, there were fewer albiceleste visitors than in March 2018: 284,310

This trend has shown its correlation in border crossings. In January, Cristo Redentor-Libertadores recorded 102,057 Argentine revenues, compared to 189,096 in January 2018.

Including all nationalities, at this stage, 206,460 people arrived in the neighboring country, against 117,523 in January. This means that the drop in the number of visitors to Argentina resulted in a 43.1% drop in the total income of those traveling to Chile by Cristo Redentor-Libertadores.

Although the Pehuenche pbad adopted 3,586 Argentines in January against 9,912 in the same month of 2018. This step recorded a decrease of 60.8% of tourists of all nationalities going to Chile, compared to January 2019 .

The decline of Argentine tourists is also reflected in the hotel occupancy rate in the neighboring country, which decreased by 4.6% between 11 and 16 February.

The most affected regions were Valparaíso, Viña del Mar and Concón, with -7.9%; followed by La Serena and Coquimbo (-6.7%); Santiago (-4.6%); Puerto Mont (-2.2%); Punta Arenas and Estrecho de Magallanes (-1.6%) and Iquique (-1.4%).
