Holecek and Groh are Czechs and have extensive mountaineering experience. Holecek, 46, started practicing this discipline in his childhood. He started out by trying his hand at outdoor activities, running in nature, and hiking in the mountains. This feeling of freedom took over her body and her soul told her to continue on this path.

A member of a modest family, he was always a rebellious and restless son. Exemplary student, but looking for greater challenges. He spent his childhood between musical activities, reading in his town and school work, which he combined with mountaineering (from the age of four), running in the woods and swimming sessions. He always tried to reduce his time in the best way. His way.

When he finished school and the obligations of adults began to take his time, he reconsidered his choices. He had been a sales manager in a company in Prague, which supported his life: a car, a house, daily work and needs covered. But he began to see how the relationship between free time and working hours was against his interests. “The only thing I can lose is time. You can’t return it or buy it, ”he said. And then he needed a change in his life.

He began to climb every day, to take increasingly difficult journeys, and to receive affection and satisfaction. He began to write, to film his odyssey, to study and to photograph. He got married, had a daughter in 2010 and since then he has sought challenges in the most deceptive mountains. He is one of the best climbers of the decade, winner of two golden ice axes for his climbs with Zdenek Hák al Chamlang (2019) and Gasherbrum I (2017).

In 2019, along with Groh, he was about to receive a third prize, for his ascent of Huandoy Norte, Peru. This escalation was the crowning achievement after unsuccessful attempts by 14 other Czechs. They did it. A course through a mountain 6360 meters high and 1200 meters long, and a difficulty of M6 and WI6, which they called “Boys 1970”.

Groh, for his part, is 32 years old and has a successful career in mountaineering and skiing. He has always devoted himself to the latter, a sport in which he won seven medals at the 2007 European Championship, two silver medals in 2010, one gold in 2011 and two silver in 2012.

He comes from a family fond of mountain sports, and his younger sister Karolína Grohová has been a fundamental axis of his time in skiing. In 2016, his career took a turn and Radoslav switched from skis to mountaineering. That year, with Jindřich Hudeček, he made his first ascent to Fitz Roy or Chaltén, an emblematic hill in Argentina of 3405 meters located in Santa Cruz, whose image appears in the shield of this province.

“I like to eat and sleep in a warm place, which is impossible in the mountains. My colleagues, Jindřich Hudeček and Marek Holeček, are terrible ascetics; they always go to the limit, both in terms of food and insulation. With a few sleeping pills I am calmer, but frankly the cold is one of the things I don’t like in Patagonia, ”he said in an interview with Radio Prague in October 2019.

His companions, especially Hudeček, would have no fear at all. It could be due to adrenaline. “Plus, in the mountains, there is no room for panic,” Groh said.
