Last Sunday, Bukele had already modified his biography on the same social network to define himself as “Dictator of El Salvador”. Then he changed his photo to that of fictional Admiral General Haffaz Aladeen, star of the movie “The Dictator” played by British actor Sacha Baron Cohen.

Previously, the president identified himself simply as the president of El Salvador or Layla’s father.

El Salvador, the first country in the world to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender, faces a rarefied political landscape after thousands of people demonstrated in the capital against the president through banners and slogans accusing him on September 15. of “dictator” for a project. to reform the justice system.

The president criticized the demonstration in a message to the nation and said the protesters “have gone to fight against a dictatorship that does not exist”.

“El Salvador will not be a dictatorship, as some activists, analysts, journalists and politicians who were not elected want to believe,” Bukele warned last March. The president has been in office since June 2019.

What is Bukele accused of?

The opposition and various international organizations accuse Bukele of advancing against the independence of the judiciary.

The president issued a legislative decree that removed a third of the judges and launched a similar measure that affected prosecutors.

After the measure, Judge Juan Antonio Durán, who leads a movement opposing the official resolution, denounced that it is a “purge”.

“This is not a purge, it is a purge against independent judges,” Durán warned.

At the same time, a group of judges and magistrates denounced the Salvadoran state before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) for “violation of judicial independence”.

The complaint was lodged through lawyers for the humanitarian organization Cristosal for “violation of the rights to equality and non-discrimination of people over 60” or having 30 years of service.

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers, Diego García-Sayán, recently called on the international community to take action against the “dismantling of the judiciary” in El Salvador by President Bukele and the Legislative Assembly .
