Alfonso Cuarón's "Roma" won the Oscars for best foreign film this sunday, becoming the first Mexican work to appear in the golden statuette of this category. From social networks, users started downloading videos of the moment of celebration in Mexico.
Javier Bardem was responsible for delivering the Oscar, who delivered his speech entirely in Spanish. "There are no borders or walls that prevent ingenuity and talent," said the Spanish actor on the stage of Dolby Theater. "In every region of the world, stories touch us and in this edition we celebrate the excellence and importance of the culture and language of different countries," he added.
He won Rome, Alfonso, his whole team, but we all won. First Mexican film to win the Oscar for "best foreign language film …" (we should change the name of this category).
All those who made the film. All Congratulations to all.– Gael Garcia Bernal (@GaelGarciaB) February 25, 2019
Cuarón picked up the gold statuette and provoked laughter among the audience by explaining that he grew up watching foreign films such as "Citizen Kane", "Jaws" or "The Godfather". In addition, he subscribed to the famous words of the French filmmaker Claude Chabrol: "There are no waves, there is only the ocean".
"The films named in this category show that we are all part of the same movement," he said. The previous Mexican works that got the nomination in this area but were left without a win are "Macario" (1960); "Ánimas Trujano" (1961); "Tlayucan" (1962); "Actas de Marusia" (1975); "Amores perros" (2000); "The crime of Father Amaro" (2002); "The Labyrinth of Fauna" (2006) and "Biutiful" (2010).
