Panic in Australia: shark bit and killed surfer

Surfer died after being attacked by shark on a beach located more than 310 kilometers north of Sydney, Australian authorities announced Tuesday. The event occurred in the morning, in Tuncurry Beach.

“Despite the efforts of the medical services, the man did not survive”, officials with ambulance services in New South Wales, the state of which Sydney is the capital, said in a tweet.

Victim, in his 50s, suffered cardiac arrest after being bitten in the thighhe told the agency AFP a spokesperson for emergency services. SharkSmart, a New South Wales government agency that manages beach safety and reports the presence of sharks, said all resorts in the area were closed after the attack and an operation was launched to search and identify the shark that attacked the surfer.

This is the first fatal shark attack this year in Australiaannounced the organization Taronga Conservation Society Australia. In 2020, there were 26 attacks of sharks in the country, eight of them were fatal.
