Some 17 people had to be hospitalized, including three in serious condition, after a mechanical breakdown, leaving the Norwegian cruiser Viking Sky adrift amidst a large swell, near the coast of Hustadvika, in the north of Norway. Nearly 500 pbadengers had to be rescued from the 1,300 people on board, after moments of panic as the ship swayed between big waves. The rescue operation involved boats and helicopters. The boat arrived at the port of Molde, north of the Nordic country, after being towed.
Up to the beginning of the towing operations, 463 of the 1,300 pbadengers of the ship had been transported ashore. Of these, 17 were hospitalized. According to Norwegian public television, only three people are in serious condition. Norwegian shipping authorities were warned Saturday at 1 pm when engine problems were reported.
From this moment, a rescue operation is articulated on land for which the intervention of several ships and helicopters is planned. Four hours after the start of the evacuation, they started rescuing groups of 10 to 15 pbadengers. The rescue operation began yesterday and was complicated by strong waves and high winds.
The Viking sky had sent a distress signal for engine problems, while it was about five kilometers from the Hustadvika coast. On Sunday, mid-morning, rescue services announced the reactivation of three engines of the ship. The cruise has resumed its journey.
The ship was traveling between Tromso and Stavanger with 1,373 people on board, 915 pbadengers – mainly from the United States and the United Kingdom – and a crew of 458 people.
