Perception of insecurity in Bogotá increased

The Chamber explained that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the investigation method had been changed and this time the study was carried out by telephone. The survey was applied to 3,500 citizens of the various cities of Bogotá at the end of last year, in particular between November 23 and December 14.

According to information from the Chamber of Commerce, Variants such as victimization, individual characteristics such as gender, relationship with state institutions and services, conditions of transport and public space, coexistence and role of sources of information were studied. .

The results showed that the perception of insecurity increased by 16 percentage points, from 60% in 2019 to 76% in 2020This is the highest level that the perception of insecurity has reached in this Chamber of Commerce study over the past 5 years. Perceptions of local safety, ie the neighborhood environment, have also deteriorated, from 44% to 41% year on year; in this case, women feel more insecure in their neighborhood than men.

Regarding victims of thefts in cities, the survey showed that 132 out of 1000 citizens were victims of theft in the past year (2020), and, according to those consulted, mobile devices are the most stolen, with 48%; followed by money theft, with 45%, and wallet theft, with 38%.

There has also been an increase in victimization, particularly among women; In the 2019 study, 61% agreed to be victims of theft, while for 2020 there was a 20% increase.
