Reactions to the death of Prince Philip

News of the Duke of Edinburgh’s death has been greeted with messages of condolence in the UK.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson released a statement which he posted on his Twitter account. “Prince Philip lived an extraordinary life, he was a naval hero in WWII, he was a man who inspired countless young people through his Duke of Edinburgh award, and most importantly, as a bridegroom of Her Majesty Queen Isabel “.

“Very sad to see the death of Prince Philip. He was a great man both in war and in peace. All our thoughts are with our beautiful Queen, ”wrote former curator Nigel Farage.

Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon said he was “saddened by the news of the Duke of Edinburgh’s death” and sent his condolences to the Queen:

TV host Piers Morgan called Prince Philip a “true Briton who devoted his life to public service without personal interest and who was a staunch supporter of Her Majesty The Queen”.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard said she had “fond memories of spending time with Prince Philip during his visit to Australia” and noted that the Duke had a “feeling of pleasure”.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, issued a statement offering condolences to the Queen and called Philip “an extraordinary man”.

It was Prince Philip

Philip was the oldest British husband. He married Princess Elizabeth in 1947 after a court that enchanted a country still reeling from the ravages of World War II.

During his seven decades of service, Felipe used to accompany the Queen on royal engagements and led thousands of his own solo appearances. He once called himself “the world’s most experienced discoverer of plates”, while the Queen praised him as her “constant strength and guide”.

The Duke was known for his improvised comments which were often quick-witted but sometimes fell ill, sometimes dramatically. Felipe continued to make public appearances into his 90s and retired in August 2017.

He has supported a number of philanthropic initiatives and has been associated with around 800 organizations. He founded the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme, a youth development program that operates in more than 130 countries and territories around the world.

After retiring, Philip spent much of his time at the Queen’s Sandringham country estate. Occasionally he was later seen at private family events such as the weddings of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Princess Eugenie to Jack Brooksbank, both at Windsor Castle.

Prince Philip’s health problems

Felipe’s advanced age meant that his health had received a lot of media attention in recent years. In December 2019, he was taken to hospital as a “precautionary measure” for what Buckingham Palace described as a “pre-existing” condition.

He had already been admitted to hospital several times for a variety of reasons, including hip replacement surgery and to treat bladder infections.

On June 10, Buckingham Palace unveiled a new official photograph to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. In it, the monarch appears with Prince Philip at Windsor Castle just before the Easter celebration.

A look at the life of Prince Philip who died on Friday

The Duke was born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark on the Greek island of Corfu in 1921. He left Greece at 18 months with his family when King Constantine was forced to abdicate after a revolt by Greek military forces . The family first settled in Paris and then, in 1928, in England.

Felipe had a traveling childhood, educated in various ways in the UK, France and Germany.

He became a decorated naval officer for his service in World War II, and when peace returned he rekindled a previous friendship with Elizabeth that quickly turned into a public romance.

To marry, the Duke renounced his Greek title, became a naturalized British subject, and took the surname Mountbatten, which was derived from the maternal side of the family. The wedding ceremony took place at Westminster Abbey in 1947. He and Elizabeth had four children: Carlos, Anna, Andrés and Eduardo.
