The policy reached the district of Chavo del 8. Carlos Villagrán, the actor who played the popular character Quico, asked to register as presidential candidate of the Mexican state of Querétaro and, simultaneously, for the town hall namesake, state capital.
Villagrán seeks his candidacy to be approved by him Querétaro Independent Party in order to appear in the elections on June 6, in which the Chamber of Deputies will be renewed and the governors and authorities of municipalities and mayors of Mexico will be elected.
María Concepción Herrera, president of the political force, reported that the party will determine which of the two inscriptions – governor or mayor – will be attributed to Villagrán. Querétaro Independiente’s decision is expected to be known on February 8.
Villagrán, 77, assured the Reforma newspaper that, if elected, his main goals are to reduce poverty and fight insecurity.
This is not the first time that a celebrity has entered the political scene in Mexico. Carmen Salinas, famous film, theater and television actress, was a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Currently, Sergio Mayer, actor, chairs the Culture Committee of the Chamber of Deputies.
The most famous case of all is that of Cuauhtémoc Blanco, scorer and symbol of the Mexican football team, who won the town hall of Cuernavaca in 2015 and in 2018 became governor of the state of Morelos.
