The President-elect of the United States, Joe biden, nominated Rachel Levine play like Assistant Secretary for Health. Like all those appointed by the next US President Levine, he must be confirmed by the Senate. If, as it is set aside, this House approves it, it would become the first transgender federal public servant.
Biden noted that Levine “bring the consistent leadership and essential expertise we need to help people overcome this pandemic, regardless of your postal code, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or disabilityand respond to the public health needs of our country at this critical time.
Levine is currently the Pennsylvania Health Secretary and professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at the Penn State School of Medicine. She served as a doctor in that state in 2015 and under secretary of health in 2017.
As Biden also noted, she is “historically and deeply qualified to help lead health efforts” the next administration.
Levine joins other nominees by Biden to accompany him in his administration. On that list is California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, who has been proposed as head of the Department of Health and Human Services and will be the first Latino to lead the department if confirmed.
In December, Biden also appointed former South Bend, Indiana mayor Pete Buttigieg as secretary of transportation. If his nomination goes through the upper house, Buttigieg will be the first secretary of the LGBTQ cabinet confirmed by the Senate.
