RAE allows virus deniers to call “Covidiota” – News

The coronavirus has also come to infect the language thanks to the tenth update of the Historical Dictionary of the Spanish Language.

The Recognized Dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) aims to bring together all the terms that have been or are being used in the language.

Given the current context, the entity has decided to add expressions referring to the pandemic, among which stands out “covidiota”, which refers to the person who refuses to comply with the health regulations enacted to prevent the spread of the virus.

Other recently added terms related to the pandemic are: “coronaplauso “, which identifies synchronized applause to thank the work of essential workers;” coronaboda “, which refers to a marriage celebrated during the coronavirus pandemic; “coronabebé, ”which names a baby born during the coronavirus pandemic, among others.

With these memberships, the Historical Dictionary of the Spanish Language added a total of 6,325 published articles.
