The Boston Red Sox will have to keep playing hard without their best pitcher, at least for the next 10 days.

In a surprising move, the Red Sox placed left-handed Chris Sale on the 10-day-injured list on Tuesday with inflammation of the left shoulder. The transfer is retroactive to July 28th. Left-handed Brian Johnson will take Sale's place in the rotation, starting Thursday against the New York Yankees.

Boston recalled right-hander Brandon Workman to align 25 players in a corresponding move.

President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski addressed the move, noting the Sox believe that Sale should be back in the rotation soon and the southpaw was "categorical", he would only be missing a start.

"We think it's a short period," Dombrowski said. "He just said it was really going up, it was something that bothered him a bit."

He also noted that Sale's grip change on his slider might have contributed to the pain. The sale will not have an MRI. He is eligible to leave the DL on August 7th.
