Resumption of violence in Syria: a bomb attack killed more than 150 people

At least 167 people have died in northern Syria in the last 48 hoursin an escalation of violence between rebel militias and the Syrian Arab Army.

The rebels fired rockets that detonated a car bomb against government forces in Hama province, an attack in which at least 37 government-linked soldiers and paramilitaries and 28 rebels died.

The escalation began on Thursday when militants launched a joint offensive against the army in the region, in response to recent territorial advances by government forces.

What followed was a wave of Syrian and Russian attacks in Hama and Idlib, the last two provinces with the presence of rebels in Syria.

The official press agency Sana He badured that the army had repelled Hama's attack, causing significant losses to his rivals, while the Syrian Observatory of Human Rights, based in the Kingdom United but with a network of informants in the field, reported the death of civilians three others injured by the impact of a rocket launched by the rebels on Sehzar, under the control of the army.

According to the British NGO, three other civilians were killed in the government bomb attacks in Idlib.

The army launched an offensive against Idlib and parts of Hama in late April because of the presence in the region of the extremist group Hayat Tahir al Sham, who controls the province.

The Idlib offensive is the biggest escalation of the war in Syria since the summer of 2018, and generated international concern because of the possibility of a worsening of the humanitarian crisis.
