Rio deaths increase due to floods

This is the second storm with deadly casualties in the river since the beginning of the year. In February, heavy rain and high winds caused the death of seven others and left the city in crisis.

Firefighters confirmed the discovery of three bodies – a woman, a girl and a man – in a taxi buried on a street that connects the neighborhoods of Botafogo to Copacabana. The most affected region was the southern zone, where affluent neighborhoods like Ipanema, Copacabana and Botafogo mingle with favelas built on the slopes of the giant hills.

A motorcyclist was dragged by the stream into the Gávea district and another man was electrocuted. In neighborhoods such as Copacabana and the Rocinha favela, the rainfall volume exceeded 300 mm, almost triple the average for the whole month of April.
